(Luffa cylindrica syn aegyptiaca)
This variety is grown mainly for the loofs. It is very bitter when mature, but can be eaten when tender.
Grow in full sun. Prolific yielding plants which are usually harvested tender to cook as a vegetable. When mature and dry the outer skin and seeds are removed and the remaining fibrous skeleton is used as a natural scrubber (loofah).
Usually germinates in 7 days. Is a creeper so best grown with a trellis support. 2 months to first harvest. Thereafter, depending on conditions and care, can yield for up to 2 years.
