Bottle Gourd Gol Lauv (Giant) Seeds - OG
ORGANIC AND OPEN POLLINATED SEEDS
Lagenaria siceraria
Gol Lauv, also known as Giant Gourd or Calabash, is a remarkable variety of bottle gourd celebrated for its large, round fruits that can weigh up to 25 kg. Originally a traditional crop of West Bengal, this variety of gourd is prized not only for its delicious taste but also for its cultural significance.
The bottle gourd varieties, with their sturdy, hard-shelled fruit have been used for over 10,000 years by ancient civilizations to make musical instruments like the sitar and tanpura, as well as bowls, ladles, and containers.
When harvested young, bottle gourds offer tender white flesh with light green, smooth skin, perfect for cooking as a vegetable in traditional Indian recipes. When fully matured, the large fruit is dried and repurposed as kitchen utensils or musical instruments, adding functional and decorative value to homes.
Gol Lauv thrives in warm, sunny climates with well-drained, organic-rich soil and plenty of moisture. It can be grown in small spaces, using trellises, pots, or even allowed to climb trees and thatched roofs in rural settings. For higher yields, farmers often prune the vine after it reaches about 2 meters, encouraging side shoots and more fruit production.
An excellent choice for Indian home gardens and traditional farming practices, combining heritage, nutrition, and utility in one unique plant.
