Cucumis melo

Vellanur Sambar Melon, also known as Vellanur Vellari, is a rare and flavourful native variety from Southern India. Producing medium-sized, oval fruits with striking yellow and green stripes. Its pale white flesh offers a mild, sweet fragrance similar to melon when fully matured. Popularly used in South Indian cooking, especially in sambar, curries, and vegetable dishes, this versatile vegetable adds authentic regional taste to any meal.

Though botanically a cucumber, Vellanur Sambar Melon stands out for its dual use - greener fruits are perfect for fresh salads or juices, while the yellower ones are ideal for cooking. The fruits ripen 2-3 weeks after appearing and require optimal sunlight, well-drained soil, and regular watering.

Ideal for home gardening in India, organic farming, and easy vegetable cultivation, this high-yield vining variety thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. It grows well in garden plots, terrace gardens, and large containers, supported by a simple trellis. Harvest is ready in about 70-85 days, making it a rewarding choice for both beginners and seasoned gardeners.
