Lagenaria siceraria

Thamburi Bottle Gourd, also known as Calabash, is a unique variety of bottle gourd used specifically to make the Thamburi (Tanpura) string instrument. This gourd is grown not only for its delicious taste but also for its cultural significance.

When harvested young, Thamburi offers tender white flesh with light green, smooth skin, perfect for cooking as a vegetable in traditional Indian recipes. When fully matured, the large fruit is dried and repurposed as kitchen utensils or musical instruments, adding functional and decorative value to homes.

Thamburi gourd thrives in warm, sunny climates with well-drained, organic-rich soil and plenty of moisture. It can be grown in small spaces, using trellises, pots, or even allowed to climb trees and thatched roofs in rural settings. For higher yields, farmers often prune the vine after it reaches about 2 meters, encouraging side shoots and more fruit production.

An excellent choice for Indian home gardens and traditional farming practices, this variety combines heritage, nutrition, and utility in one unique plant.
